When visiting Sacré-Coeur in Paris, many people are often discouraged by the number of steps leading up to the basilica. However, there are alternative ways to reach the top without having to climb all the stairs. One way to avoid the steps is by taking the funicular that runs from the bottom of the hill up to the basilica.

300 stairs up to the dome of Sacré-Cœur A visit to Sacré-Cœur was one of my pre-planned and definite items on the itinerary. When we were in Paris last, in 2003, our visit was rather short but this time I really wanted to make time for a proper tour of the church and a visit to the dome.

The Sacré-Coeur Dome has a height of 83 meters and is accessible by climbing 300 steps (no elevator here). The climb up to the Dome is one of the top things to do in Montmartre; the view from there is stunning! The access to the Dome is outside the Basilica, on the left. The entrance to visit the Sacré-Coeur Crypt is also from the left side.

Bring water as the steps leading to the Sacre Coeur seem never ending and is quite a challenge for those who have not hit the gym in a while! When leaving Mortmartre and the Sacre Coeur, we headed to the Abbesses (green line 12) metro station. The walk to the Abbesses station past place du Tertre felt much safer than walk from the Anvers station.
